American Eagles

Also known as Bald Eagles, American Eagles are one of the most recognized national symbols for the United States of America. Adult Bald Eagles are easily recognized for their bald white heads and tail feathers and brown body while younger Bald Eagles are all brown. In addition, they have a hooked beak and talon feet, which are great for fishing and feeding.

Appearing on several official seals, coins, and flags, American Eagles stand approximately 35 inches and have a 75 inch wingspan. Although they were on the threatened conservation list, American Eagles are now abundant in almost all of North America, including the continental United States and parts of Canada and Mexico.

American Eagles are often found near water and large trees. These trees must have a good line of vision and be close in location to their prey but far from humans. Creating the largest nest of any North American bird, Eagles hunt fish by swooping down into the water and clenching a fish with his or her claws. They then hold the fish with one claw and dissect the fish with the other.

For a Native American, Eagles are a large part of their cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs. In fact, American Eagles are a sacred bird for many Native Americans and are considered to be messengers between gods and humans.

They also use eagle feathers as a symbol of honor and as a part of clothing, including fans and head dresses. However, there are several more Native American Eagle rituals, like those that celebrate guests, promote fertility, and help with healing the injured and sick.

Due to their national status, as well as additional reasons listed by the wildlife preserve, it is illegal to own American eagle feathers unless you are able to legally prove your connection to a federally recognized Native American tribe. These regulations restrict access to Bald Eagles help to preserve the birds for years and years to come.
